I did everything else in the house. Gutted and renovated the bathrooms (adding a half bath), renovated the kitchen, completely redid the den, rewired the house, redid the yard (twice!), replaced every door in the house, installed hardwood floors, replaced all the windows...
I'm really happy with the house, but there were a several things I wanted. A place to put a pool table, a laundry/mud room (instead of a closet off the kitchen), and a home theater. And moving the laundry room would allow me to make the breakfast area a little bigger, which would help with the stair access. So it was either move or add on. Building an addition was "easier". Besides, it is a great excuse to buy more tools.
The concept is to extend the already deep garage about 10', use the extra space to build a work/storage room, a laundry/mud room, and the stairs. In reality, I mostly removed the old garage and built a new garage. I did the plans and pulled the permit myself. Because Texas law allows one to do anything on their "homestead" (a taxing classification), I can do everything myself. This includes the "trades" (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) in addition to non-trade items (framing, sheetrock, siding, ...).
Below are partial pages out of the plans. On the following pages are pictures of the progress. Important - the images below are up to 2 meg in size, the pictures on the following pages average 200k. They are uploading at 128mb.
