At 6959m (22,831') Aconcagua is the tallest mountain outside of central Asia. It is also one of the "easier" tall mountains in the world in that it requires no technical mountaineering skills. It is basically just a walk in the park. Ok, a very strenuous hike in the park at very high altitude with the potential for bad weather. Specifically Aconcagua Provincial Park, Mendoza Province, Argentina. The mountain is located on the Chilean border, and North American's may find it easier to fly to Mendoza via Santiago, Chile rather than Buenos Areas, Argentina.
In January 2002 I went back to Argentina to do some more mountaineering with Diego Magaldi. I previously attempted the mountain, however conditions did not work out that trip. I really both trips with Diego, and wouldn't be surprised if our paths crossed again. While this would be my second time to Aconcagua, I was looking forward to a different acclimatization climb, smaller group of serious mountaineers, and trying some new equipment.
If you are ever interested in Patagonia, Aconcagua, or other places in South America, I highly recommend Diego Magaldi. Not only is he a very experienced climber and extremely fluent in English and Spanish, but he is a really nice guy.
